Thames Matter is a collection of work created through collecting both materials and inspiration directly from the River Thames foreshore.
This set, titled Thames Matters: Fracture Duo, is inspired by the contrasting textures found along the Thames foreshore. A layer of Thames slip has been applied to the top of the two vessels, creating a natural blistered effect as the slip reacts during firing. The base of the vessels takes influence from the weathered surface of a large rock found along the foreshore. I recreated this coarse, uneven texture using a combination of London clay, found along the Thames, and black stoneware. Together, the contrasting surfaces reflect the fractured, weathered and unpredictable qualities of the foreshore.
