Thames Matter is a collection of work created using materials gathered along the River Thames.
While reclaiming the clay from the Thames, I repeatedly find fragments of glass hidden throughout, some so fine they passed unnoticed through the cleaning process, later revealing themselves as small cuts across my hands while throwing.
During firing tests, these particles created unexpected iridescent marks across the surface of the pots. That discovery became the starting point for this piece. For the final work, I deliberately reintroduced shards of Thames glass into the surface of the vessel. In the kiln, the vitrified clay and melting glass fused together, creating textures and reflective surfaces that speak directly to the polluted materiality of the river itself.
